"Demand for coconuts is increasing"

The peak season for coconuts from India is coming up shortly, as the summer in European markets comes closer and closer, says Sachin Beri, director for Indian fresh coconut exporter Vashini: "The coconut season in India is in full swing. Although we produce coconuts year-round, we're currently getting to the peak of the season. As it is getting to the summer in European countries, demand for coconuts is increasing as well. Consumers love the fresh coconuts on the beach and such. However, next to the export markets, demand on the local market is strong as well. Sizes are satisfying for our clients and shipments to Europe and the UK will get going on a higher scale shortly."

According to Beri, although India produces coconuts year round, the upcoming two months are where the production is at its peak: "The peak season of production in India is in May and June. You could say that during these months, the production in India reaches 100 per cent. Although the rest of the year, coconuts are produced as well, the production capacity drops a fair bit during these months, to about 60 per cent of what we produce during the peak of the season."

It's not all smooth sailing, as the current heatwaves do delay things a bit, Beri states. "Currently the weather is too hot, and we would welcome the rain season to stabilize the temperatures a bit. These heatwaves have caused a bit of a delay in production, but we're looking ahead towards a satisfying season, both for us as well as our clients."
