The general meeting of the French Pomegranate Union last month was an opportunity to take stock of actions undertaken since the union was created a year ago and to discuss the future projects.
55 of the 200 pomegranate growers in France are now members of this union. So many growers have shown renewed interest in joining forces in terms of marketing and communication. Their pomegranate production is now predominantly organic, with 95% of the growers using organic methods. "This number shows that, technically speaking, there are no confirmed pests at the moment. In fact, all the growers are keen to continue growing organically," according to Enora Jacob.
Pomegranate molasses: a new product on the French market
Consumers who already enjoyed pomegranate juice will now be able to taste pomegranate molasses as well. "This is a new product that is very common in countries like Turkey. We are introducing it to the French market this year. It is a very interesting product, both in terms of quality and taste."
6,000 tons in 2026
The French pomegranate production currently covers 600 hectares and represents 3,000 tons of pomegranates, but it is set to double in the next two years. "There were large plantings in 2019 and 2020. The frost in 2022 slowed down the momentum and production, so we expect the orchards to reach full production in 2026, with a potential of 6,000 tons."
Market shares to take from imports
The development of production reflects a desire for diversification rather than an increase in consumption. "Pomegranates are a diversification crop. In the face of global warming, farmers need to diversify their sources of income. Growing French pomegranates is an excellent way to meet this objective, especially as it is consistent with French consumption, currently based mainly on imports."
