Impact of extreme heat on vegetable prices in Cebu City

In Cebu City, the escalation of vegetable prices is impacting both consumers and vendors. Individuals are feeling the pressure on their grocery budgets. The situation is exacerbated by the city's exposure to high heat indexes, reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius since the onset of summer, alongside sporadic water supplies.

These conditions have led to diminished crop yields and wilting crops, with harvests dwindling since February. Dalaguete, in particular, has faced prolonged water shortages, affecting crop longevity and profitability at markets. Price variability at Mantalongon Public Market also complicates matters, with weekly fluctuations influenced by bulk purchase dynamics.

A local vendor voiced concerns over the potential depletion of vegetable stocks in the forthcoming weeks due to persistent adverse weather conditions, necessitating alternative livelihood strategies. The necessity to adjust prices has put vendors in a difficult position, as they strive to cover the increased costs of procurement, transportation, and labor, despite understanding customer grievances regarding affordability. The root cause of the supply issue is attributed to the prevailing heat and water scarcity, affecting both purchasers and producers of vegetables in the area.
