Kenyan consumers opt for alternatives as red onion prices soar

In Kenya, the price of red onions has escalated to Sh200 per kilogram, leading consumers to seek alternative options like spring onions, white onions, or leeks to maintain their budget. The increase in the cost of red onions is due to several factors, including adverse weather conditions, decreased supply from logistical issues, particularly with imports from Egypt and Tanzania, and rising transportation expenses.

This situation has significantly impacted consumers, forcing them to consider more cost-effective substitutes. "Red onions are hard to find nowadays. If you find them, what is available in the market now is smaller and very expensive, so people are opting for the white onions because they are bigger and a kilo goes for Sh150. Leeks are also cheaper than red onions. We're selling them at Sh100," stated a vendor at City Park Market in Nairobi's Parklands.
