Marcel van der Pluijm, Feeling Fresh:

"Early demand for Dutch bell peppers from North America following a successful Spanish season"

The export of Dutch fruit-vegetables to North America has begun again. Spanish bell pepper exports continued well this winter, too, says Marcel van der Pluijm of Feeling Fresh. "In October, several hurricanes hit western Mexico, leading to quite a bit of product loss. So, we had good bell pepper demand all winter long," he says.

"Air freight rates were relatively high for the first few months of last year. This year, they're back to pre-pandemic levels. We could only export Spanish bell peppers to North America from mid-January, but that strengthened demand. Since there were fewer passenger flights to America in the winter, whoever had air cargo space was king."

"Those shortages meant we could continue the Spanish season well. We also started exporting the first Dutch peppers two weeks ago. It's rare to see America enter the market in March," Marcel admits, "especially at prices of €14-€16. That may not yet herald a strong spring, though, as it remains to be seen how big demand will be once Canadian production begins. But the season has started well."

"In addition to bell peppers, we export a varied package. For instance, last year, eggplants were very expensive. This year, their prices are friendlier, and exports have continued smoothly. America has shown some interest in Dutch asparagus, too. Combined with items like rhubarb, chicory, and Italian lettuce, we can offer our customers an assorted package," Marcel concludes.
