Venice Cold Stores

New check point for imported produce

Venice Cold Stores, the cold-storage terminal of the Venice Port controlled by DCS Tramaco and SDC, is continuing its re-launching journey started in 2021 with the new management, and is ending 2022 on a positive note with the announcement of great news.

"As of December 1st, the Ministry has recognized Venice Cold Stores as a PDC, i.e. an UVAC-PIG Check Point for goods imported from third countries when it comes to both fresh produce and MOCA products, meaning products that come into contact with food (kitchenware, kitchen tools, etc.)," reports CEO Riccardo Martini.

Inspectors from the Ministry of Health will have a dedicated area available with an office, changing rooms and two laboratories as well as all the tools needed to performs the checks. In addition, goods awaiting to be checked or to be cleared will have dedicated areas - either cooled or ambient temperature - with a capacity of over 100 tons.

Checks are carried out respecting the cold chain and in environments also certified for the handling of organic products. This new service is aimed mainly at importers in the north-east of the country and their forwarders needing safe and swift checks for goods arriving at the Venice port.

The service is interesting also for goods from third countries arriving on trucks, both via road and aboard Ro-Ro ships. As the PDC is part of the Traces system, community operators can also access its services.

The PDC is in addition to a Phytosanitary sample and check point set up last year. The contribution of UVAC-PIF Veneto and ADSP Venezia were crucial in obtaining the authorization, which has the objective of speeding up and improving the activity of the offices intervening on port traffic.

The PDC therefore increases the range of services offered by Venice Cold Stores & Logistics, which boasts 6,000 sq m of cold storage units, another 6,000 sq m of ambient-temperature warehouses and a 11,000 sq m courtyard. The warehouses, which can also be used to store overseas deposits or as VAT warehouses, hold the ISO-9001and IFS certifications.
