14 hectares of retractable roof cooling house technology installed in Saudi Arabia

Green Riyadh project has selected Cravo to supply 14 hectares for a state-of-the-art nursery complex. It is one of the most ambitious urban forestation projects in the world, launched by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz, on 19 March 2019. The project will be a milestone that contributes to fulfilling a key goal of the Saudi Vision 2030 to promote Riyadh’s position among the world’s top 100 most livable cities.

Additional green space
The Green Riyadh project will contribute to increasing the per capita share of green space and raise the total green spaces by planting trees around all city features and facilities as well as in all its provinces. All the greenings will be watered by recycled water from an irrigation network. The greening initiative will lead to improved air quality and reduced temperatures in the city. Consequently, this project will encourage Riyadh citizens to follow a healthy lifestyle which is part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. Learn more about the project here.

To grow so many trees in such a short time, Green Riyadh needs to produce crops quickly and ensure the plants are fully acclimated to withstand the harsh hot and dry Saudi climate.

To manage the transition from small cuttings to large, finished shrubs, the nursery will have three of Cravo’s retractable roof products:

  • a 3,000 m² retractable A-Frame house with retractable cooling curtains for the first stage after propagation.
  • Two blocks of 5 hectares of retractable Rafter houses with retractable cooling curtains to space out and grow the young plants.
  • A 3.4 ha retractable Flat Roof cooling house to acclimate the large trees and shrubs.

The Cravo houses are also contributing to the sustainability of this project since the retractable roofs, walls and interior curtain systems will only consume approximately 50 kW hours of electricity per day for all 14 hectares.

Over 90 hectares of retractable cooling houses in the Middle East.

Conserving water and electricity is vital in the Gulf Coast Countries. Since Cravo retractable cooling houses use up to 95 percent less water and electricity for cooling than conventional pad and fan greenhouses, there are now over 90 hectares of retractable cooling house technology in operation or under construction in the gulf region growing vegetables and berries.
