Zespri executives are addressing a mouse infestation found in the first SunGold kiwifruit shipment of the season to Europe, discovered in Zeebrugge, Belgium. The shipment, valued at approximately $12 million, consists of 1.2 million trays. The infestation was identified upon the vessel Crown Garnet's arrival, leading to the quarantine of the fruit at Zespri's storage facility.
The European selling season's commencement has been postponed as the extent of the damage is assessed. Jason Te Brake, Zespri's COO, noted the infestation's spread across the ship's refrigerated holds, raising concerns over food safety due to mice-associated diseases.
Zespri's history with food safety includes instances of typhoid detection in 2011, packaging contamination in 2016, and a listeria recall in the U.S. last year. The current situation may result in a significant financial loss if the fruit is deemed unsalvageable. The ship, operated by Cool Carriers, is not among the newer fleet but was reported to be in good condition. Pest management experts highlight the rarity of mice aboard ships compared to rats, emphasizing the carrier's responsibility for pest monitoring. Zespri is evaluating its next steps, with the cargo insured against such losses.
