Genesis Fresh -

New Spanish citrus variety Onix launched worldwide

Genesis Fresh announced the global debut of Onix™, a citrus variety discovered in Seville, Spain. Globally managed by Genesis Fresh, this new variety combines a surprising flavor profile, vibrant color and long shelf life.

"Onix represents a breakthrough in the pigmented oranges segment, surpassing conventional varieties like Sanguinelli by two-three calibers" says David Alba, CEO of Genesis Fresh. "What makes the Onix orange a highly attractive fruit is the combination of an incredible external and internal coloration with a refreshing flavor and delicate aroma that evokes the traditional Sanguinelli taste".

Scientifically proven to contain high levels of anthocyanins at optimal ripeness, as confirmed by the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMCP) in Valencia, Onix showcases external coloration and internal pigmentation, even in challenging conditions.

"While Onix and Sanguinelli are comparable in organoleptic quality, Onix excels by achieving optimal size and external coloring earlier, enabling earlier harvest," explains Alba. "Moreover, Onix exhibits exceptional ontree endurance and outstanding post-harvest life, extending its sales window to approximately four-five months in each hemisphere."

Designed for global appeal, Onix boasts exceptional export capabilities, making it ideal for markets across Asia, North America, and Europe. "Its post-harvest life, durability, fantastic coloration and firmness make it a highly attractive variety for export," adds Alba.

Patricia Sagarminaga, Global Director Marketing and Communications at AmFresh, remarks, "The Onix brand embodies innovation and quality, offering consumers a naturally branded fruit that is truly 'out of this world, made in Spain.' The elegant, innovative branding and positioning of Onix within the citrus and fresh produce space have resonated with consumers across European markets, driving remarkable in-store sales performance as shoppers seek a sense of discovery amidst the ordinary. Furthermore, to experience the versatility of Onix, we invite shoppers to visit www.onixcitrus.com where AI-powered algorithms generate personalized recipes for desserts and cocktails, providing inspiration and solutions for curious shoppers."

Onix has entrance into major UK retailers including Tesco and M&S, as well as prominent establishments in Spain such as Eroski, and Germany's retailers REWE and Kaufland.

Onix is available as both a loose fruit retailing at £1 a piece or elegantly packaged in three or five-piece sets. Despite its limited availability in boutique volumes this season, the response has been "nothing short of phenomenal" and AmFresh has sampled Onix across France, Switzerland, Poland and other markets states Sagarminaga.
