Can an industry tomato boast high yields despite low water conditions?

Seed company Med Hermes Vegetable Seeds presented its new industry tomato Forentun F1 and cucurbit varietal range by seed company at Apricena (FG). A lot of people attended the event including local nurseries, producers, associations and technicians.

The audience

The General Manager Alfredo Amoroso made the opening speech, illustrating the company's objectives and the investments made to complete the new processing and seed storage facility. He also stressed how the company has acquired more land to extend its experimental and research stations both in greenhouses and open fields.

Afterwards, Arcangelo Ambrosio from R&D Sud Italia presented the cucurbit range. The manager highlighted the "success of the W36 and W40 watermelon varieties and the positive feedback received by Canary yellow melons Mim184."

The focus then shifted on Forentum F industry tomatoes which raised a lot of interest after the excellent results achieved during the past campaign. A debate followed the presentation, about the yields of the past few years: it emerged that "the genetic of Forentum F1 results in strong and rustic plants with an excellent vegetative-productive balance, which means yields are satisfactory despite the increasingly extreme temperatures and low water availability."

Forentum F1

"Forentum F1 is productive even when irrigation is made with brackish water. The plant structure is also excellent, just like the containment of blossom-end rot! Plants are strong and provide good coverage until ripening is complete, which leads to less damage caused by direct sunlight, meaning berries do not lose their texture so there is less rotting and waste. All of these important factors were highlighted during the past campaign, characterized by abundant rain during the first part of plant development, followed by summer temperatures exceeding 40°C," reports Med Hermes.

Forentum F1 boasts quite an extensive resistance package: HR: TSWV; Vd; Fol: 0,1; Pst - IR: Ma, Mi, Mj. Brix level is excellent, the color is deep red even after peeling. "The uniformity of berries and industrial yields reach the maximum market levels."
