The avocado market has been faced with several challenges this year. Supply of Mexico’s old avocado crop was down in the months of June and July. At the same time, harvest of the country’s new crop was delayed, causing a shortage in the market. As a result, the market was high for an extended period of time. “Once Mexico’s new crop picked up in volume in September, it helped with the supplies and right now, we are heavily pulling from Mexico,” says Kraig Loomis with GreenFruit Avocados. While rain could interrupt harvest in the next few months, the expectation is for supplies to be plentiful through the Super Bowl pull.
Overall demand for avocados still continues to increase while supplies remain volatile. “Therefore, growing and sourcing from multiple regions is key,” said Loomis. “We want to make sure we always have supply available for our customers.” While Mexico still is a key growing and sourcing country for GreenFruit, the company has increasingly focused on Colombia in recent years. Although the Colombian avocado harvest has been delayed, Loomis expects promotable volumes on both conventional and organic avocados from Colombia to be available from November through Super Bowl 2024.
Another region that made a big positive impact on GreenFruit’s avocado program this year was California. “It was the third year we were working with our partner grower in California and the region was an important part of our program, particularly on the West Coast,” shared Loomis.
Because of limited supply, pricing was very high throughout the summer. “Once supplies improved in September, prices came down.”
Next week, GreenFruit will be exhibiting at IPFA’s Global Produce & Floral Show in Anaheim, California. “It is a very important show for us where we get to see our current customers and meet with potential customers,” Loomis commented. “Our goal is for visitors to get to know GreenFruit Avocados and learn about our supply regions.” To see avocados from Colombia and Mexico firsthand, visit booth #3988 on October 20 and 21.
