Nonthaburi durian production plummeting in Thailand

The Nonthaburi durian, one of Thailand's premier fruit varieties, has experienced a drastic reduction in production, descending to a mere 10% of the previous year's output. This decline has significantly affected local growers, propelling them into a challenging situation. The cause of this downturn is primarily linked to the extended periods of hot weather that have altered the typical climate conditions in the region.

Samrueng Sunthornsang, head of the Durian Nonthaburi Conservation and Restoration Association, highlighted the severity of the current year for durian cultivation, marking it as the most critical in his two decades of experience. The scarcity of Nonthaburi durian has led to a sharp increase in prices, especially for popular varieties like Kan Yao and Monthong. A survey conducted by Samrueng across various orchards showed a drastic decrease in yield, with his own orchard producing only 150 durians this year compared to 1,500 the previous year. The scarcity of these durians means that only a fortunate few will have the opportunity to taste them this season.
