Litchi cultivation on the rise in Rajshahi, Bangladesh

In the Rajshahi region of Bangladesh, the area dedicated to litchi cultivation has seen an increase, with the current year showing promise for a substantial yield. The region is known for its cultivation of various litchi varieties, including high-yield types such as China-3, Bombay, and Madrazi.

According to Mozder Hossain, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), there has been a slight increase in litchi cultivation, reaching 530 hectares compared to 525 hectares in the previous year. Dr. Alim Uddin, a retired chief scientific officer at the Fruit Research Station, mentioned that local litchi varieties are expected to enter the market by the end of the month, with the Bombay variety following by mid-next month.

The China-3 (hybrid), Bombay, and Madrazi varieties are particularly favored in the Paba, Godagari, Charghat, Bagmara, Bagha, Puthia, and Durgapur subdistricts, which are acclaimed for their high-quality litchis. Abdur Razzaque from Kapasia village highlighted that commercial litchi farming is expanding into areas such as Raipara, Bulanpur, Chhotobongram, and Katakhali, as well as other subdistricts like Baghmara, Durgapur, Puthia, Paba, and Godagari.
