Cambodia's banana producers face major threat due to Fusarium fungus

Cambodia's banana industry is grappling with the persistent threat of Fusarium fungus, despite efforts to mitigate its spread. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries reveals a 21% decline in banana exports in 2023, amounting to around 290,000 tons. The El NiƱo phenomenon has been identified as a contributing factor, but insiders also point to the 'Banana Fusarium attack' as a significant influence.

Banana Fusarium Wilt, a soil-borne fungus causing banana leaves to wilt and yellow, has been a long-standing issue for farmers. As the disease progresses, more leaves yellow and die, impacting banana production and exports in Southeast Asia's tropical regions. Woo Lee, a representative of a Chinese company involved in the banana industry, stated that the fungus remains a major concern for producers and investors.

In response to the Fusarium threat, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPCC) Secretariat launched a project to enhance Cambodia's phytosanitary system, backed by Chinese experts. The project began with a Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation to identify system gaps, followed by training courses on pest management techniques and technologies.
