The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries reveals a 21% decline in banana exports in 2023, amounting to around 290,000 tons. The El Niño phenomenon has been identified as a contributing factor, but insiders also point to the 'Banana Fusarium attack' as a significant influence.
Banana Fusarium Wilt, a soil-borne fungus causing banana leaves to wilt and yellow, has been a long-standing issue for farmers. As the disease progresses, more leaves yellow and die, impacting banana production and exports in Southeast Asia's tropical regions. Woo Lee, a representative of a Chinese company involved in the banana industry, stated that the fungus remains a major concern for producers and investors.
In response to the Fusarium threat, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPCC) Secretariat launched a project to enhance Cambodia's phytosanitary system, backed by Chinese experts. The project began with a Phytosanitary Capacity Evaluation to identify system gaps, followed by training courses on pest management techniques and technologies.
