Manfred van der Vlag, from Sweet Fruits:

"Due to shortages of Peruvian mangoes, we were able to successfully market the Brazilian Palmer variety this year"

"A tight supply of Peruvian mangoes this year has led to a strong demand for Palmer mangoes from Brazil," says Manfred van der Vlag, of the Dutch sales office of Sweet Fruits in Emmen. "The Palmer has always been a bit of an underdog, but due to market shortages, we have regained credibility and have managed to score some successes with a high-quality product from our own production sites."

"At the moment, there is still a tight mango supply in the market. The first Kent mangoes from West Africa are slowly arriving, but overall, there are significant shortages. However, I expect the supply to increase a bit in the coming weeks. Next week should be the last with a tight supply," says Manfred. For the new Brazilian season, I expect a normal supply and normal volumes. "Last season was quite unique due to the shortages in Peru."

Sweet Fruits is focused on the year-round supply of the Palmer variety from Brazil. "Although we were able to capitalize on the market shortages, the weather in Brazil was not entirely favorable, and as a result, we also needed to make additional purchases here and there. At the moment, prices in the free market range between 8.50 and 10.50 euros, depending on the size. The larger sizes are somewhat more readily available in the market, but there is a significant shortage of the smaller ones."
