Granfrutta Zani

Good period for strawberries, decent prices and no overproduction

The strawberry market is going on with decent prices: after Easter, yields were not high, while demand remained good. Antonio Zani, Italy commercial manager for Granfrutta Zani, outlines the situation for this period.

"We are satisfied because there was not the price drop after Easter that some feared. The yields in the field were not high, while the demands from the large-scale retail trade were good: this resulted in a positive price trend. In fact, at the end of last week, we had less product available than requested." The origins of the strawberries are the Basilicata and Campania regions.

"We are also members of the Consortium that boasts the 'Candonga Fragola Top Quality' brand, and probably many in Italy have already seen the TV commercial for this high-end product," continues Zani.

Regarding packaging formats, Zani states that the most popular are the boxes with 12 trays of 350 grams, or the 1 kg single-layer tray, or the 500 grams for 12 trays.

"In recent years," the representative specifies, "the single-layer option, with a uniform product and high °Brix, is in high demand: these are the characteristics of the Solatìa brand strawberries by Granfrutta Zani, offered in the 1 kg package. This type of packaging is increasingly popular," states Antonio Zani from the commercial office, "and the requests keep coming in."

"The strawberries are packaged directly in the field," Zani specifies, "Then, in the facility, we apply the top film and perform a final check. Within 24 hours or a little more, the fruits move from the field to the sales points."

The Solatìa brand strawberries have been on the market since February and will remain until mid-May, or as long as the quality is high.

The main market is Italy, but a portion of strawberries is also exported, mostly to Austria. The foreign market representative is Enrico Silighini.
