EU recognizes "Araban Sarımsağı" garlic from Turkey as PDO

The European Union has awarded the "Araban Sarımsağı" garlic, cultivated exclusively in the Araban district of Gaziantep, Turkey, the protected designation of origin (PDO) status. This marks it as the second Turkish garlic variety, following "Taşköprü Sarımsağı," to receive such recognition, highlighting its unique qualities attributed to the specific geographical and climatic conditions of its production area.

Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, commented on the significance of this recognition for Turkish agriculture, emphasizing the role of the PDO in enhancing consumer awareness and market value for the authentic product. Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, in collaboration with the Araban Chamber of Agriculture, spearheaded the application for the PDO status, aiming to further promote and develop the garlic's market presence, including derivative products like garlic powder and black garlic.

Local producers and agricultural advisors in Gaziantep have expressed optimism regarding the PDO recognition's impact on the "Araban Sarımsağı" garlic's brand value and export potential, drawing parallels to the success of "Gaziantep Baklavası" in gaining international acclaim.
