A Jingold technical team attended the 11th edition International kiwifruit symposium, a global summit organized by ISHS (International Society for Horticultural Science) over the past few days (February 20-24) in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. It was an important occasion to assess the current research and studies on kiwifruit and share innovations, techniques and strategies.
The Jingold delegation was made up by Cristina Fabbroni, Evangelos Xylogiannis and Emanuele Pierpaoli. Professor Pasquale Losciale from the University of Bari and PhD student Andrea Giovannini from the University of Bologna also attended and presented their studies on Jiingold varieties. In particular, Professor Losciale presented a two-year study on the chill hours needed by Jingold cultivars in order to pair the cultivar with the perfect environment.
PhD Giovannini presented instead the first results of a three-year study on the physiology of the Jinyan variety in different light conditions. Andrea Strano, another PhD from the University of Bologna, then presented a research on the control of botrytis, the main pathogen affecting kiwifruits in storage, by using ozone as an alternative to chemical products.
Jingold is also a sponsor of the international convention which gathers over 300 researchers, technicians and professionals, who meet to share the latest progress on emerging issues for this species. This edition focused on sustainability and climate change, as well as the onset of new diseases.
A poster from the University of Bologna was also presented, drafted by Professor Chiara Cevoli in collaboration with Valentina Goffi from Jingold, who developed a method to determine the intensity of the red color in the flesh of the Oriental Red variety.
