Drought impacts vegetable prices in Mysuru

In Mysuru, a lack of rainfall has led to an increase in the prices of various vegetables and tender coconuts. The price of tender coconut has risen from Rs. 40 to Rs. 50. Similarly, the cost of commonly consumed vegetables such as coconuts, beans, garlic, capsicum, green chilies, and cucumber has also increased. Capsicum and carrot are now priced at Rs. 50 per kg, Green chilies at Rs. 80 per kg, cucumber at Rs. 40 per kg, garlic at Rs. 180 per kg, and potato at Rs. 35 per kg. However, the prices of tomatoes and onions remain relatively stable at Rs. 20 to Rs. 25 per kg. The cost of greens like coriander and amaranthus has also increased to Rs. 10 per bundle. It is anticipated that vegetable prices may continue to rise if the region does not receive rainfall soon.

According to a coconut merchant in Devaraja Market, the increase in coconut prices is attributed to the low yield within the state. He mentioned, "We are importing coconuts from Pollachi in Tamil Nadu and with the high transportation charges involved there is no other option but to increase the prices of the coconuts depending on their size." Another merchant highlighted that transportation charges for coconuts from Tamil Nadu range from Rs. 1.50 to Rs. 2, leading to expectations of higher coconut prices in the upcoming months.
