Giorgio Donnarumma (Nuovafrutta): "Things should improve in May"

April has been a complicated month for mangoes

"The situation is very complicated when it comes to mangoes. Peru practically ended a season characterized by limited quantities and only the last Keitt fruits are coming in by air. The first Kent fruits from the Ivory Coast are arriving by air in week 17, which will be followed by shipments by sea. Volumes should be regular in this case," explains Giorgio Donnarumma, sales manager at Nuovafrutta.

"Very little produce is coming in from Brazil and quality is low due to the unstable weather of the past few months."

"Up until two weeks ago, mangoes of different varieties shipped by sea had quotations of €3-5 for 4 kg packages, now we are lucky if we can find them at €8-9. Grade 9 fruits are sought after by the big retail chain, but prices are very high. Suppliers that have such fruits do not sell them unless associated with grades 6 and 7, which tend to be commercialized less frequently."

According to the wholesaler, April is not an easy month. "Things could improve in May, with larger volumes coming in from the Ivory Coast and the normalization of quantities from Brazil."
