In an effort to enhance food security within the Global South, the International Potato Center (CIP), supported by CGIAR, has launched a comprehensive survey focusing on key market segments. This initiative aims at developing potato varieties that are resilient and adaptable. The survey seeks to collect data from a wide range of agricultural stakeholders, including smallholder farmers and large agribusinesses, to align potato breeding programs with the specific needs and challenges of these regions.
The Global South faces unique agricultural hurdles such as variable climates and limited water resources. CIP's approach, utilizing CGIAR's network, is designed to address these challenges. The survey examines various aspects across CGIAR sub-regions, including the area dedicated to potato cultivation, average farm yield, and farm gate prices. This data will assist CIP's Market Intelligence team in utilizing about 200 indicators from GLOMIP, the Global Market Intelligence Platform, available at glomip.cgiar.org.
The findings from this survey are expected to guide CGIAR's strategy to improve food security through research and ecological management, aiming at sustainable development and better livelihoods for farmers. Stakeholders across the agricultural sector are encouraged to participate, contributing towards transforming the agricultural landscape of the Global South.
