The strawberry varieties from Nova Siri Genetics are achieving some of the best productivity results in the Spanish province of Huelva, thus shaping up as some of the most reliable options for producing companies looking for early varieties to meet the market demand from November and December and throughout the season, which will end in June.
The NSG 203–Marimbella® stands out not just for its great capacity to combine earliness, quality, shape, color, and flavor, or its high success rate in the cultivation phase but also for its productivity, with 50,000 kg/ha in soil and 68,000 kg/ha in soilless conditions. These figures had been reached by mid-April with only first-class strawberries (the second-class fruit and that intended for the processing industry are not taken into account). The difference between the regular and soilless productions is a consequence of the higher plant density per hectare in the latter, compared to soil production.
These figures hold even more value when considering that in the current season, the strawberry production has fallen below what was expected. In fact, only 9% of the total production had been harvested by the end of February instead of the expected 20%.
However, with just over a month and a half to go before the end of the season, the NSG 203–Marimbella® is going to surpass the usual productivity of 50,000 kg/ha of first-class fruit, as it is not currently showing any signs of exhaustion. In fact, the variety is vegetatively active and in good balance, with good quality flowers, an indicator that guarantees reaching the estimated productions per hectare.
Another NSG variety with an increasing presence in Huelva is the NSG 207–Gioelita®, with a productivity of 27,000 kg/ha in soil, 59,000 kg/ha in soilless conditions, and 33,000 kg/ha in pots. This season, the company has also introduced the variety NSG 465–Rossetta®, which is mostly cultivated on soil, where it reaches 26,000 kg/ha.
These new varieties give producing and marketing companies a bigger chance for a successful season.
