Social media hyped about blueberry price surges at Australian supermarkets

In Australia, consumers have observed a significant increase in the cost of blueberries at major supermarket chains, Coles and Woolworths. However, for the most part, the elevated prices can be attributed to the current off-season status of the fruit, leading to decreased availability. Transitioning from the Tasmanian season, which has concluded, to the upcoming peak season in Coffs Harbour, has resulted in a supply gap. This gap has, in turn, driven wholesale prices upward.

Efforts are underway to augment supply as the new season approaches. Additionally, adverse weather conditions in Queensland have impacted local blueberry yields, further constraining supply. Some blueberries are being sourced from New Zealand, although availability from this region is also lower compared to previous years, contributing to the current high prices. Expectations are set for an increase in supply and a subsequent reduction in prices as the blueberry season progresses.

So despite a storm of negative comments on social media, some were quick to point out that blueberries are currently not in season, prompting the price spike. "It's not in season now. Only buy when things are in season to get a bargain. I have a blueberry bush at home," one netizen responded. Another said: "Just eat grapes, in season and cheap."
