In India, the mango season has commenced with varieties such as Mancurad and Alphonso arriving in markets. However, prices remain steep, with Mancurad priced at Rs 2,400 per dozen and Alphonso at Rs 1,000 per dozen, making them less accessible for many households.
The season is reported to be lean this year, attributed to unfavorable weather conditions impacting production. Local farmers have noted a decrease in yield, particularly affecting cashew and mango crops. Despite the introduction of various mango varieties from neighboring states, the Goan Mancurad is particularly sought after for its unique taste and superior quality. Yet, consumers find it challenging to afford these mangoes, with prices remaining high throughout the season and difficulties in distinguishing between naturally and artificially ripened fruit.
