In 2022, Fiji's ginger sector generated $6.9 million in export value from a total volume of 1,219.3 tonnes. Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the significant contribution of ginger to Fiji's agricultural export earnings during the National Ginger Workshop. The agricultural sector's contribution to the national domestic export earnings amounted to $927.5m, with ginger playing an important role.
Fiji has 750 registered ginger growers, focusing on two varieties: white and pink, primarily in the Central Division. The largest market for Fiji's ginger is Australia, followed by other markets including the United States, Europe, New Zealand, and Asia. The export of value-added ginger products has seen a notable increase, indicating growing opportunities in the sector.
To support the ginger industry's growth, the Fijian Government has allocated $600,000 in the 2023-2024 budget for the Ginger Farming Programme, alongside initiatives to assist food processors and exporters. Rayalu emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation among stakeholders to enhance the sector's development.
