India's mango production is projected to increase to 24 million tons in the 2023-24 crop year, marking a 14% rise from the previous year, according to T. Damodaran, Director of ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture. Despite the India Meteorological Department's prediction of prolonged heat waves during the April-May period, these conditions are not expected to significantly affect mango yields, assuming adequate irrigation practices are maintained in May to prevent excessive fruit dropping.
The India Meteorological Department has indicated that the upcoming summer may experience longer than usual heat waves, particularly affecting the south peninsula, central India, east India, and the plains of northwest India. However, the mango flowering and fruit setting stages have progressed well under favorable weather conditions, suggesting that normal heat waves might indirectly benefit the crop rather than causing harm.
