In January, Peruvian pomegranate exports amounted to $6,681,000 i.e. 448% more than the $1,218,000 achieved in the same month of the previous year, according to the Association of Exporters (ADEX). Exports of fresh pomegranate accounted for 96.6% of the total exported ($6,451,000), while the frozen product accounted for the remaining 3.4% ($230,000).
The Netherlands was the most important destination with $5,561,000, a 429% increase, and 83% of the share. Brazil followed with $325,000 and a 718% increase, and the US ranked third with $304,000 and a 454% increase. Peru also sent the fruit to the UK, Germany, Canada, and Colombia.
Peru's pomegranate cultivation is mainly concentrated in Ica, which accounts for about 80% of the area, followed by Arequipa, Lima, Lambayeque, Ancash, and, most recently, Tacna.
