South Korea pledges continued support to Uganda for agricultural research

The Korea Partnership for Innovation of Agriculture (KOPIA) Uganda, under the leadership of the newly appointed Director Dr. Cho Ilho, has reiterated its commitment to assisting Ugandan farmers in the transition from traditional to modern agricultural practices. This pledge was made during a discussion with Dr. Yona Baguma, the Director General of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), at the NARO headquarters in Entebbe. Dr. Cho takes over from Dr. Park Taeson, who completed a five-year tenure.

KOPIA has been instrumental in backing NARO's efforts to enhance agricultural programs that benefit smallholder farmers, with investments exceeding UGX 7.5 billion in the development of potato seeds, citrus, rice, and local chicken breeds through advanced technologies. Notably, the initiative has supported citrus production management and market expansion in the Teso region, alongside the distribution of NAROPOT 1, a high-yield potato variety from NARO, and improved breeds of local chicken, aimed at increasing household incomes.
