Thai durian trade embraces technology for Chinese market

In recent discussions in Hong Kong, Thai trade representative Narumon Pinyosinwat and a Tencent executive, alongside a delegate from Shanghai East Best Foreign Trade (SEBFT), a prominent durian importer in China, have finalized an agreement. SEBFT will acquire 3,000 containers of Thai durians, totaling 10 billion baht, with the initial shipment of 400 containers expected next month.

A notable feature of this deal is the introduction of an invisible QR code on each durian, facilitated by Tencent's blockchain technology, allowing verification of authenticity through a smartphone scan. This system employs special inks that are visible only under certain light wavelengths, such as infrared.

Narumon stated: "this innovation would instill trust among Chinese buyers," ensuring the protection of Thai durian integrity. Additionally, the Thai Commerce Ministry has collaborated with Tencent to develop an online platform aimed at simplifying transactions between Thai vendors and Chinese purchasers, optimizing the export process.
