Chilean cherry 2023/24 season closes with good demand for late varieties in China

Giddings-Cerasus or better known in China as Xiaomifeng has closed the Chilean 2023/24 cherry season again with the varieties of Cerasina called: Final 12.1 and 13.1 from the German geneticist Peter Stoppel. For a second consecutive year the Chilean company delivered this variety to the market, "which is captivating the interest of more channels across China with excellent demand and prices," said Ramón Arrau, CEO of Giddings Cerasus.

On 22 March the company held a celebration to close the Chilean cherries season in the three largest markets in China for imported fresh fruit: Guangzhou, Jiaxing and Shanghai, partnering with its key distributors in China Jwm, Higo and Riverking.

Multiple origins
Giddings Cerasus Group is a Latin American multinational, with headquarters in Chile, specialized in the production of cherries coming from Chile and the United States.

"Our strategy since our first steps in China has been to position the company as a sustainable, trust-worthy and quality supplier of fresh cherries. Today, the Xiaomifeng label is one of the most prestigious brands of Chile within the Chinese market and for more than five years it has also been gaining a strong position in cherries from the United States."

Variety, production and forecast
Gonzalo Larrain, Commercial Manager of Giddings Cerasus, "As a company, we are growing in plantations for this varieties and also experiencing an interesting demand from other companies who wish to obtain our sub-license to grow the variety, we forecast a strong growth in the future to more countries across Asia."

Positive market feedback
The last fruit of the season in China was sold immediately. The company has shipped around 200,000 kg of this variety to China and for the closing activity has sixfold its shipment from last season. The last batch from Giddings Cerasus sent to the market arrived in the vessel Seapan Belief on 18 March, with more than 90,000 kg's.

Gonzalo Matamala, General Manager of Giddings Fruit Asia and China Office, points out "This is one of the few, of the so called 'new varieties' of cherries, that stands out from the crowd because it provides firmness and flavor with longer transit times, allowing distributors to market and sell it through different channels in the Chinese ecosystem"

Mia Lu, Procurement Director of Higo Jiaxing Fruit notes, "This is our second year closing the season of Chilean cherries in China, with Cerasina variety packed in Cerasus-Xiaomifeng label. Our customers were calling us two weeks ago, to make a booking on this last cherry shipment, it is impressive how much potential this variety has."

Sean Chen, Commodity Director of Riverking, "I have tried fruit from this genetic program from the USA and now we are marketing it in Shanghai from our strategic partner Giddings Cerasus, this fruit is strong and flavorful, becoming a strong leader in the late part of the season."
