Bangladesh mandates that watermelons are to be sold by piece, not by weight

The Directorate of the National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) in Bangladesh has mandated that watermelons are to be sold by the piece, not by weight, to prevent consumer exploitation.

A.H.M. Sofiquzzaman, the DNCRP Director General, announced the regulation during the launch of a fair price watermelon initiative in Dhaka. This decision comes after observations that traders were purchasing watermelons by the piece from the southern coastal regions and selling them by weight for significant profits.

Sofiquzzaman emphasized that watermelons should be sold in the same manner they are purchased and highlighted the requirement for traders to provide a valid voucher with each sale. Violations of this policy will result in penalties, and consumers are encouraged to report any instances of watermelons being sold by weight. The enforcement of this rule aims to protect consumer rights and ensure fair trading practices in the watermelon market.
