USAID assistance to enable households in Ukraine to produce nearly 70,000 tons of vegetables

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, has launched a campaign to provide seeds for spring planting in 2024 to de-occupied communities and socially vulnerable populations in Ukraine. This initiative, announced by the Committee on Agricultural and Land Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, falls under the AGRI-Ukraine project.

As part of AGRI-Ukraine, USAID will distribute over 200,000 seed packets to households affected by the war. Ten tons of seeds will be allocated to residents of liberated and frontline territories, as well as displaced persons and socially vulnerable populations from other regions. This assistance will enable households to produce approximately 70,000 tons of vegetables.

International producers such as Gowan Seed, Bayer, Enza Zaden, and Syngenta have joined the initiative, donating seeds of carrots, zucchinis, melons, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, and sweet corn.

Seed distribution will be coordinated by local councils under the supervision of the All-Ukrainian Association of Communities, supported by the USAID AGRO Program project "Consolidated Communities." Throughout March, seed distribution will take place, facilitated by local authorities.

To enhance cultivation effectiveness, communities will also receive infographics with recommendations on planting, plant care, and vegetable harvest storage.
