“It’s a crazy season for organic ginger from Peru,” says Nelson Vidaurre with Añawi. Plantings have been significantly reduced across the board compared to the previous year. “Last year may have been very challenging for some growers. As a result, there is a lot less availability this year.” With good planning, Peru is able to go almost year-round on ginger production, but it is uncertain how long the current season will run for. “We usually start shipping in June and go at least through April, but we’ll have to see if the season will last that long this time around,” Vidaurre commented.
Añawi exports ginger from Peru but also has an import arm in the United States, trying to make a direct bridge between the farmer in Peru and the buyer in the United States. “Being on both ends of the spectrum provides us several benefits,” Vidaurre said. “First of all, it ensures traceability. We source from farmers that we have a relationship with. They are all farmers we know well, and they have the right certification, which allows us to export to the United States. Secondly, it allows us to be more competitive on price.”
While supplies are lower, demand is healthy. “As we move into the colder season, demand typically increases as people like to stay healthy and give their immune system a boost.” With demand going up, Vidaurre is concerned supplies won’t be sufficient. “My goal is to cover my key suppliers this season, and hopefully grow our reach with others. However, the limited supply will make it challenging.” Having said that, if prices continue to go up at the field level at the current pace, there may be a negative impact on demand. “It is hard to predict if the market will sustain. If it does, it could push some buyers to jump to another country for their supplies.”
In addition to the US, Canada is also a key market for Añawi. “According to Agraria Peru, Añawi is the largest exporter of organic ginger to Canada with a share of about 27 percent. The company is also branching out to Europe.
