Serra da Mantiqueira produces more than 60% of Brazilian strawberries

In the south of Minas Gerais, 25 municipalities represent more than 60% of the national cultivation of strawberries. An example of this region is Serra da Mantiqueira, known for its mild climate that provides favorable conditions for farmers. The municipalities of Bom Repouso, Espírito Santo do Dourado, Estiva, Senador Amaral, and Pouso Alegre stand out in this area.

Dirceu Avelino Pereira is one of the strawberry producers in Pouso Alegre (MG), who has a plantation of 7,000 fruit plants in a greenhouse. “Here in the countryside, especially in this cold season, only strawberries are produced because they are more profitable. Selling is easy: just pack it up and let the spoonbill come get it,” he said.

Senar Minas, in partnership with the Rural Union of Pouso Alegre, has dedicated time and attention to strawberry producers. Currently, 60 families are assisted by Technical and Managerial Assistance, in addition to professional training courses.
