Italy's Amenduni: "We sell a lot in Mexico, Peru, Kenya and the Dominican Republic."

Avocado oil extraction as a very up-and-coming market

The avocado has significantly increased in popularity over the past few years. The growth in consumption of this tropical fruit has been uninterrupted on all global marketplaces, in part due to a growing awareness among consumers about the health benefits associated with regular consumption of this product.

However, so much not only is related to the popularity of fresh avocados. In fact, according to recently published data, the size of the global market for the processed product reached $2.2 billion in 2022, growing to $3.3 billion by 2028. The emerging trend is the production of avocado oil.

We analyzed the international scenario for this segment with Amenduni Nicola SpA, a company specialized in the production and sales of avocado oil extraction systems, raw and extra virgin.

"The process of extracting oil," explains Aldo Pesce, export sales manager of the aforementioned company, "is becoming relevant in different areas of the world, especially where the volume of waste fruit is significant, due to logistical, infrastructural and climatic issues, which are major barriers to commercializing fresh avocados.

The use of waste fruits to extract oil is a fairly widespread practice. Industrial-scale production trials have been in place since the early 2000s. Amenduni's journey into the processing of avocado oil began in Mexico in 2005.

"Since then, we have provided optimal solutions in terms of quality and quantity of the extracted oil. All our machines are manufactured in Puglia, in the Bari plant, and sold mainly to non-EU markets, thanks to our well-established technical network and service centers located all over the world. We are leaders when it comes to manufacturing the equipment needed for the entire avocado oil extraction process, from crushing to final separation. As part of the Valbruna Group, which specializes in the production of special stainless steel and is owned by the Amenduni family, we have full control over the quality of the materials used, thus guaranteeing customers maximum reliability of the machines."

Amenduni has developed more than 60 extraction projects in the avocado oil sector alone. "Our machines," continues Pesce, "have been successfully installed and are currently working in Mexico, the largest producer of avocado oil and fresh avocados, as well as in Kenya, Peru, Colombia, Ethiopia, and the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, the volumes of waste fruit on the Italian and European markets do not allow for industrial-scale production of avocado oil at the moment, but we hope in the future that the market will evolve in this area as well."

In the case of avocado oil, we believe that several countries still have untapped potential. For example, Central and South America, Chile, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Brazil and Argentina can be important producers of avocado oil. As for Africa, that is, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Rwanda, Malawi, and Zambia, these are countries that can become international operators in the avocado oil industry. "In the case of Asia, countries such as Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam have massive amounts of avocado waste that currently go unused," concluded the manager.
