Elena Rogojnikova, The Greenery:

"Beauregard, Bellevue, and Covington available year-round"

In the Netherlands, The Greenery imports Beauregard, Bellevue, and Covington sweet potatoes from America and Egypt. These varieties are all available year-round in sizes M (6 and 18kg), L1 and L2 (6kg), and XL (6 and 18kg).

“We supply these to local and overseas retail and wholesale customers," says Elena Rogojnikova, Senior Buyer. The American and Egyptian suppliers are socially certified. "That's a requirement we place on the parties we buy from. The suppliers have GlobalGAP and GRASP certificates. Plus, our supplier from Egypt has periodic SMETA audits. This supplier is also actively engaged in water management because it's in a water-risk area."

Trend: sweet potato fries
"Sweet potatoes have become increasingly popular recently because of a trendy dish: sweet potato fries. Many restaurant chains have this sweet, crunchy dish on their menu. But people are also serving this more and more at home. Supermarkets are cleverly capitalizing on this by offering sliced sweet potato fries. It's much cheaper to make them yourself, especially during these times of inflation," Elena concludes.

Healthy choice
It is thought that sweet potatoes are healthier than regular potatoes. That is, however, not entirely true. Their nutritional value makes both carbohydrate sources rather than vegetables. According to the Dutch Nutrition Center, sweet and regular potatoes are a healthy choice if you prepare them with a small amount of healthy fat and not (too much) salt.
