"We want to help growers reduce post-harvest losses of table grapes"

Nutritious, thin-skinned, and juicy table grapes are a very popular fruit among consumers. However, table grapes are perishable. During storage and transportation, threshing and rot often occur due to mechanical vibration, microbial infection, and browning of fruit stems.

Poor quality table grapes affect market sales and consumer experience, and the post-harvest loss rate of grapes in China is as high as 20% every year. In order to solve this problem, modern preservation technology came into being. Chesen BioChem is a company specializing in the production of fresh-keeping products. Cathy, the person in charge of the company, introduced PlanFresh, a fresh-keeping agent product suitable for grapes.

According to Cathy, there are mainly two ways of applying the PlanFresh 1-MCP card for the preservation of fresh table grapes, refrigerated preservation, and room temperature preservation. "Cold storage is a commonly used fresh-keeping method, which can effectively extend the fresh-keeping period of grapes. During the cold storage process, 1-MCP cards can slow down the ripening and rotting of fruits and extend the fresh-keeping period of grapes. At the same time, the 1-MCP card can also help the grapes maintain a high hardness and taste, and improve the quality and market competitiveness of the grapes.”

"For grapes that need to be transported or sold at room temperature, room temperature preservation is essential. Using 1-MCP cards in room temperature preservation is also very effective. Placing 1-MCP cards in airtight grape packaging boxes can inhibit the ethylene synthesis of the fruit and slow down the ripening and rotting of the fruit, thus prolonging the shelf life of the grapes. In addition, using 1-MCP cards can also increase the firmness and taste of the grapes, and improve the quality and quality of the grapes," Cathy said.

Then, Cathy introduced how to use the fresh-keeping card, "Our PlanFresh 1-MCP card is very convenient to use, just put the card in the grape packing box, and it can exert a good fresh-keeping effect. At the right temperature and under humidity conditions, the card can reduce fruit softening, color change, and rot, and significantly prolong the shelf life and quality of grapes. Normally, the temperature of the grape storage room is controlled at 0-2°C, and the humidity is controlled at 90%-95 %. In such an environment, the 1-MCP card can release gas continuously to achieve the best fresh-keeping effect.”

"PlanFresh 1-MCP cards have achieved good results in the preservation of table grapes, and this technology has broad application prospects. With the improvement of people's living standards and the pursuit of healthy food, grapes, etc., the requirements for fruits are getting higher and higher.

In addition to being used in the preservation of table grapes, the PlanFresh 1-MCP card can also be applied to keep the fruit stems of table grapes green, effectively extending the green retention period of the fruit stems and improving the quality of the fruit. Keeping the stem of table grapes green is an important aspect of post-harvest preservation technology, and it mainly refers to preventing the yellowing and falling off of the stem, maintaining the greenness and hardness of the stem, and prolonging the life of the stem.

"The main components of fruit stems are cell wall and intercellular substance. The cell wall is mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, etc., and the intercellular substance is mainly extracellular fluid. After the grapes are picked, the fruit stem gradually loses water. Changes in the cell wall and intercellular substance lead to changes in the fruit stems. The chlorophyll in the fruit stems gradually disappears, and the fruit stems turn from green to yellow, which is caused by ethylene synthesis. During the postharvest process of grapes, the speed of ethylene synthesis in the stem is accelerated, leading to the yellowing and shedding of the fruit stem. In order to prolong the service life of the fruit stem, some measures need to be taken to prevent the yellowing and shedding of the fruit stem. The PlanFresh 1-MCP card can effectively prevent the fruit stem from yellowing and falling off."

Then, Cathy introduced the precautions for the use of the product, "In the process of using the PlanFresh 1-MCP card, you should pay attention to the synergy with other fresh-keeping technologies, such as the combination of negative pressure packaging, high CO2 storage, SO2 grape fresh-keeping pads, etc. Using it can further improve the green keeping effect of fruit stems, realize long-term freshness preservation of grape pulp and fruit stems, improve the quality and added value of fruits, and bring better economic benefits and taste experience to fruit farmers and consumers."

According to Cathy, the application of 1-MCP cards in the preservation of table grapes can also be used for reference in the preservation of other fruits and vegetables, such as peaches, cherries, blueberries, bell peppers, etc., so as to better satisfy people’s demand for various fruits and vegetable.

"Our PlanFresh cards do not contain harmful chemical ingredients and will not have negative impacts on the human body and the environment. It is a very environmentally friendly and healthy fresh-keeping technology. We can provide customized fresh-keeping cards according to customer requirements."

Currently, Chesen BioChem's PlanFresh 1-MCP cards are sold in China. "We strive to provide quality agrochemicals for postharvest treatments and are actively promoting the registration of plant hormones abroad. We are looking for strategic partners interested in retailing PlanFresh 1-MCP and other agrochemicals."
