The Dominican Republic could be self-sufficient in garlic production by 2024

Garlic cultivation in the Dominican Republic has been increasing progressively in recent years, to the point that next year the country could become self-sufficient in its production, stated Limber Cruz, the Minister of Agriculture while delivering 60 million pesos to garlic producers in Constance.

In Constance, garlic production dropped significantly to just 94.32 hectares, Cruz stated. “We have been increasing year after year and this year we are going to surpass 314 hectares. The goal of this subsidy is to grow new areas while increasing productivity. It's one of the objectives of the Ministry of Agriculture and the entire agricultural cabinet: sowing and harvesting more in the areas sown,” he stressed.

“We have about 20,000 quintals of garlic and today we are delivering all of this subsidy money,” the minister said. “According to our forecasts, this year we'll produce more than half of what the country consumes, and next year we should achieve garlic self-sufficiency in the Dominican Republic,” he stated.

The Agricultural Bank has also provided producers with more than 150 million pesos for the planting of garlic.
