The onion price in Uzbekistan has exceeded the previous record by 4 times

According to EastFruit analysts, the average wholesale prices for onions in Uzbekistan have updated another record. As of January 20, 2023, they reach 8 000 UZS for small wholesale lots. This is four times more expensive than the previous record price for onions in this period, which was set last year.

After large volumes of onions stored in improper conditions by farmers and traders of Uzbekistan froze during abnormal cold weather, a huge shortage of onions led to a sharp increase in prices.

However, there is a tense situation in the global onion market and not only in Central Asia. Many natural disasters and Russian aggression against Ukraine have led to a global increase in onion prices. You can read more about this in our recent analysis of the global onion market with a forecast for the coming months.

By the way, we note that the wholesale prices for onions in Uzbekistan this week were the highest in the region. Current wholesale price for onions in Uzbekistan are even higher than in Ukraine, where up to 80% of commercial production is in the territory occupied by Russian troops.
