Before the season began, there was wild speculation about the decreased melon planting in Brazil. However, there has been ample of this fruit supply in recent weeks, says Wesley de Waal of MG Fruit in the Netherlands.
"That's resulted in still-below-cost prices for Galias. Those are currently between €7.50 and €8, but the market's edging up slightly," the importer says. "At around €10, Cantaloupe melons sales are smoother and have been fairly stable recently. Toward Christmas, demand for these from particularly processors has increased."
"Yellow melon demand's reasonable to good. The large ones sell for €11 to €11.50; the small ones for as much as €12-12.50. The watermelon market is under pressure, though," explains Wesley. "That market has different prices and qualities, but you can reckon on about €0.80 for good seedless watermelons."
"I don't expect any shortages either. We should get another shipment before and after the weekend, so there will be plenty of melons available in all sizes. I also don't anticipate any major market changes after New Year. We're already busy preparing for the new Costa Rican and Honduran seasons," Wesley concludes.
