Uzbekistan set a new record of watermelon exports in 2022

Uzbekistan exported a record volume of watermelons in 2022, exceeding last year’s volume by almost twice. The increase was possible mainly due to an almost two-fold increase in the volume of exports to Kazakhstan and a multiple increase in export volume to Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, EastFruit experts note.

The watermelon export season from Uzbekistan started on May 15-20 this year, at about the same time as last year. As statistics show, there were almost no exports in the second half of November 2022, which means the end of the export season of watermelons from Uzbekistan.

According to the official data, Uzbekistan exported 81 800 tonnes of watermelon worth $18.1 million in May-November 2022, which is 1.9 times more in physical terms than in the same period in 2021 and 1.7 times the record high of 2020 in the same period.

Uzbek watermelons were exported in 2022 to the following countries:

  • Kazakhstan – 42 400 tonnes (51.8% of total watermelon export)
  • Russia – 17 200 tonnes (21.0%)
  • Kyrgyzstan – 10 500 tonnes (12.8%)
  • Tajikistan – 9 600 tonnes (11.7%)
  • Belarus – 1 200 tonnes (1.4%)
  • Latvia – 674 tonnes (0.8%)
  • Mongolia – 154 tonnes (0.2%)
  • Estonia – 86 tonnes (0.1%)
  • Ukraine – 43 tonnes (0.1%)
  • UAE – 4 tonnes

As can be seen from the data, the largest share (97.4%) was exported to the Top-4 countries in the above list.

Compared to the same period last year, such a solid increase in the export of Uzbek watermelon in 2022 was achieved mainly due to a sharp increase in supplies to neighboring countries:

  • Kazakhstan – from 23 900 tonnes in 2021 to 42 400 tonnes in 2022, i.e. 1.8 times
  • Kyrgyzstan – from 3 900 to 10 500 tonnes, i.e. 2.7 times
  • Tajikistan – from 60 to 9 600 tonnes, i.e. 160 times

Another considerable increase was recorded in exports to the Russian market – from 14 400 tonnes last year to 17 200 tonnes in 2022 – by 19%.

It should be noted that there were no exports of watermelon from Uzbekistan to Latvia in 2018-2021. The last time Uzbek watermelons were delivered was in 2017 in a volume of only 16 tonnes, but in the 2022 season, Uzbekistan exported 674 tonnes of watermelons there!

Despite the small volumes of shipments, the supply of Uzbek watermelons to Mongolia has been growing for the third year in a row. A trial batch of watermelons of 2 tonnes was delivered in 2019 from Uzbekistan to Mongolia. 15 tonnes were exported in 2020, 40 tonnes in 2021, and 154 tonnes in 2022, i.e. the volume of exports this season has grown almost 4 times compared to last year.
