Europe purchased 34% of the 2,461,000 tons of avocados that were exported in the world in 2021, ranking as the second largest importer of this fruit, only behind the United States. In the last year, Europe's avocado consumption (estimated marketed volume) increased by approximately 55,000 tons (+7%), although not all countries show the same growth.
In 2021, France was the largest European consumer of avocados with an estimated marketed volume of 157,657 tons -between June 2021 and May 2022–, i.e. 8% more than in the previous year, according to data published by the Center for Agricultural Research for International Development (CIRAD).
It was followed by Spain with an estimated marketed volume of 123,211 tons, although, according to CIRAD experts, this figure is questionable because a significant part of the avocados imported into this country is subsequently re-exported to other European countries.
Germany ranked third with a 3% increase over the previous year's consumption figures. It was followed by the United Kingdom, which also experienced slight growth.
However, while France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are the main consumers of avocados in terms of volume, the Scandinavians have the highest per capita consumption.
In particular, the Danes consume the most avocados, with 3 kg per year per capita, while the average Norwegian consumes 2.8 kg of avocados per year and the average Swedish 1.9 kg.
In comparison, per capita consumption in France stands at 2.3 kg, in the United Kingdom at 1.5 kg, and in Germany at 1.3 kg. Switzerland also occupies a prominent position as its per capita consumption stands at 2.1 kg.
It should be noted that consumption in Italy increased by a remarkable 37% over the previous year.
