There is a new wave of mangoes with different colors and flavors, hitting Australian supermarket shelves. Perfection Fresh is rolling out the Scarlet Delight and Hula varieties, which are currently grown on farms in the Northern Territory and far north Queensland.
Chief executive Michael Simonetta said it was an exciting time for industry: "This journey started more than 10 years ago when we imported the original rootstock from Israel. So this is our second year of semi-commercial production and we're still two to three years away from full production, but we're encouraged by how they're performing agronomically and how they're being received by customers."
Other varieties on the rise include the Mahachanok, which is a long, sweet mango that originates from Thailand and grown by Tous Garden in the Northern Territory. The owners have described it as the "Miss Universe of mangoes" and recently announced plans to plant thousands of extra Mahachanok trees.
Nutrano Produce starting trialling Lady Jane and Lady Grace mangoes in 2013 and is now producing fruit for markets around Australia. Nutrano's farm manager in Katherine, Dale McDonald, said yields had increased this year by 48 per cent as plantations matured, and Nutrano was excited to see its mangoes going into major supermarkets.
