Tony Saglietto, Peruzzo:

France: green clementines for the holiday season

Originally known for its grape production, the Peruzzo group regularly seeks innovations to expand its range with new original fruit and vegetables. After the Rossy red kiwi, the Calabrian clementine, the Bo&Bon melon, the Lucas Oro Italia grapes and the Chocolate & Vanilla oranges, Peruzzo is now revealing the Green Lemon clementine, a citrus fruit “combining sweetness and acidity, ideal for the holiday season.”

Innovation on our plates
For 3 years now, the Peruzzo group has been marketing Green Lemon clementines, grown in the Sorrento region using reasoned agricultural practices. These Italian clementines are 100% natural and untreated after harvest. This year, 700 tons will arrive on the French market to introduce the variety to a wider public.

“At Peruzzo, we want to meet consumer expectations by offering them more choices. Everyone is familiar with the Corsican and Spanish clementines, so we decided to propose a fruit that cannot be easily found anywhere, the Green Lemon clementine, for some innovation on our plates,” explains Tony Saglietto, director of the Peruzzo group.

“Our clients are really fond of this new product”
The Green Lemon clementines seem to be a success. The feedback received is already very positive. “This niche product is a hit. Wholesalers such as MG and Clément & fils have been placing relatively large orders. Contrary to other niche products like the vanilla orange, this Green Lemon clementine is a success with everyone and our clients keep asking for more. Its color is surprisingly green but this has no impact on its maturity or the color of the flesh under the skin. Finally, it tastes like a classic clementine with a more lemony/acidulous flavor while keeping a good sugar level (Brix 13°).”

Today, the Green Lemon clementine is a niche product, but its production should intensify in the coming years. “The demand for this variety is increasing so we have been planting more trees. We are looking for partner producers in Italy and we have just found a farmer who agreed to plant another 2 hectares.”

Currently sold at 3.29 €/kg [3.43 USD/kg], the Green Lemon clementines are already available in French supermarkets and produce retailers. At the end of November, the red kiwis and Calabrian clementines will also be present on the shelves again.
