"The quality and price of Hainan Sanya mangoes are stable in the new season"

The mangoes in Sanya, Hainan, China are currently being picked and put on the market one after another. The production season will last until June/July next year. Sanya, Hainan is located at 18° north latitude, with abundant sunshine and a large temperature difference between day and night, and the fruits grown there have excellent taste.

"There are many varieties of mangoes in Hainan. Among them, the tree-ripe Guifei  and Jinhuang are the mainstream varieties, with stable quality and sales." Mr. Zhao Hongxiu from Hainan Daxian Fruit Trading Co., Ltd. told Freshplaza.

Jinhuang mango

"The fruits produced in Hainan like the warm climate. The weather in Sanya, Hainan is generally stable this year. From the current point of view, the color and smoothness of the mango skin are excellent. Good fruits account for 80% of the total production, which is basically the same as last year. In terms of purchase prices in production areas, taking Jinhuang mango and tree-rip Guifeimang as examples, the purchase price is basically the same as last year from now to before the Spring Festival, and the sales volume is good.”

It is understood that in recent years, Hainan has paid attention to introducing agricultural talents and improved planting technology. Due to the climate advantage of Hainan itself, the quality and price of the mangoes produced are relatively stable.

Tree-ripe Guifei mango

"Generally speaking, the sweetness of mangoes is high when they hang on the tree for a long time. This is the biggest difference between mangoes ripened on trees and mangoes ripened with chemicals. Mangoes ripened on trees can reach 20-22 degrees of sugar, and you can get the smell right out of the box. However, the mango ripened by chemicals usually has a sugar content of only about 10 degrees.”

According to Mr. Zhao, in order to allow the mangoes on the tree to have enough time to bear fruit, only 2-2.5 kg of fruit can be picked per day during the harvest season for a mango tree with a production capacity of 50 kg. This increases the labor cost and the losses are relatively large. That's why the price of tree-ripe mangoes is usually higher.

"Because of Hainan's climate, when the production season of many domestic fruits ends at the end of the year, a large number of Hainan fruits get on the market, and the production season is longer, filling the gap period for domestic fruits. There is less competition of the same kind. This is the advantage of Hainan fruit in sales. Taking mangoes as an example, the only similar varieties on the market at the same time were Vietnamese Jinhuang mangoes and some Thai mangoes, which had an impact on the mangoes produced in Sanya. But the impact is not significant. Both market prices and tastes are different." Mr. Zhao explained.
