Bangladesh to plant more onions to secure supply

The government of Bangladesh, through agriculture minister Abdur Razzaque, encouraged the cultivation of onions during the summer off season to ensure supply.

While the country produces enough during the peak season, there is a lack of cold storage facilities and technology leading to many rotten onions and eventual limited supplies.

He said to avoid importing more, his department set a roadmap which saw 100 000 tons of onion produce over the last two years. The focus is on off season onion cultivation to create self-sufficiency said Razzaque.
