Ecuador exported its first shipment of yellow pitahaya to Peru on November 14, after Peru's National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) authorized the phytosanitary requirements for the import of this Ecuadorian fruit.
Ecuador has 1,528 hectares devoted to pitahaya production and 2,260 producers linked to the export of this item. Morona, Santiago, Manabi, and Guayas are the leading pitahaya producing provinces.
The MAG, through Agrocalidad technicians, provides technical support to farmers so they can lower production costs and improve crop yields. Producers process the fruit at registered collection centers that have been approved as pest exclusion structures.
Currently, Ecuador exports pitahaya to 56 countries. The United States is its main destination market, followed by Canada, Colombia, and Singapore.
