Yams good for health: enhance brain function, eases menopause symptoms

Yams, a popular tuber vegetable that originated in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, with 95% grown in Africa, is good for our health. It can also help to ease symptoms of menopause. This is according to different scientific studies with the contents of yam found to beneficial to humans.

In a 12 week study by Tohda et al (2017) respondents who took yam extract as a supplement recorded advanced brain function compared to a group who took a placebo. 

In a 30 day study by Wu et al. (2015), 24 women who shifted from a normal rice diet to yams in 2-3 meals, found their blood levels of estrone and estradiol increased by 26% and 27% respectively. This means during menopause these levels are lower, while yams helped to increase these levels it may ease menopause symptoms.

The name Yams originate from the the Fulani language in Ghana, through the word that means "to eat" nyami.
