Cherry prices are expected to double before Christmas

Cherry prices are expected to double before Christmas following recent floods in Australia. Heavy rain and cool weather means there will be fewer cherries harvested.

The price of cherries is expected to double before Christmas because of excessive wet weather and unseasonable cooler temperatures, one of the industry’s most prominent growers has predicted according to www.brisbanetimes.com.au

One cherry growers expects cherry prices to increase as a result of rain and cooler weather.

“The main problem is the cool weather and the rain,” he says. “We have lost about 40 trees because the ground has been constantly too wet,” he said. “The way it’s going, I think the best you could hope for is that you pick 50 per cent of your crop”.

He said he expected that consumers could expect to pay up to $20 per kilo instead of $12 to $14 as a result.
