Moroccan strawberry and raspberry exporters brace for the off-season

After a long European summer, which delayed the European domestic strawberry and raspberry season, Moroccan exporters are waiting for the market to stabilize.

Mr. Mehdi Benchekroun, CEO of the exporter DMB & CO, said: "We do not intend to compete with domestic European production since this requires huge operating costs. We will wait for the exhaustion of domestic supply in Europe to fill its place in the market".

While some large producers in Morocco are starting to export earlier, these are companies that are taking on more costs or have already made large investments in distribution channels. Mr. Benchekroun reassures: "Despite this, we will always have our place in the market. Europe has a constant demand throughout the year".

The Moroccan exporter has clients in traditional European marketplaces, such as Saint Charles, Rungis, and Frankfurt. Mr. Benchekroun says, "Our market in Europe is doing well and has the capacity to absorb our offer. However, we sometimes have difficulties regarding payment. We've been in the past forced to sell at open prices and will avoid that in the next seasons. Thus, we are aiming to diversify our markets and look to the east, to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar."

The exporter relies on a wide network of producers in Larache and Moulay Bousselhem, notorious red fruit-producing region, and offers the most popular varieties and calibers of strawberry and raspberry.
